| The so-called Sevso Hoard First offered 1980, then Sotheby's 1990 |
| The first piece of the so-called Sevso Treasure turned up in London in 1980 with a Viennese dealer, and by 1990 there were 14 pieces of Late Antique and Byzantine silver, along with the bronze cauldron in which they were supposedly found. There is no proof that these items were looted, and whilst several countries have demanded their return, none has won a legal claim in court: Lebanon, Croatia, Hungary, Serbia. Claims have also been made that there are other known items from the hoard, or that it was put together in the 20th century rather than Antiquity. Everything about this hoard remains mysterious, and the Getty passed on it. |
